At a celebration event in London, hosted by HRH the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, the Richmond team won the “Making a Difference” award for its training to front line workers across the Borough.

Speaking at the event, Princess Anne, who has been Patron of the Citizens Advice service since 1990, thanked the volunteers for their enormous contribution to the MoneyActive project, CAB clients and their communities. She spoke of the importance of financial capability work as a prevention measure, particularly in these uncertain economic times.

The afternoon tea celebrated the contribution made by over 1,600 project volunteers across the country over the last three years, with awards for the best volunteers and teams.

The “Making a Difference” award recognised the professionalism of the training; particularly the way in which it enables key support workers to recognise when and how to intervene in financial matters and what early intervention those workers can do to alleviate a crisis before the client can access help or seeks help.

One of the delegates who went on the course described the training she received as a “lightbulb moment”.

The Making a Difference Award was one of only 3 awards handed out to financial capability projects across the country.

Madeline Thomas, Financial Capability Manager for Richmond Citizens Advice said:
“I am extremely proud of all the financial capability volunteers who have contributed to the success of the Richmond team over this past year. This is entirely due to their professionalism and fantastic team spirit.

“This award highlights two things. Firstly, the work we do is vital. It can – and does – make a real financial difference to those who need help the most. It also shows us how much more we have to do to ensure everyone is educated in how to understand their money and the decisions that underpin every transaction before they make expensive financial mistakes.”

This programme, devised and written by the Richmond team, is designed for support workers, children’s centre managers and any other professionals in the Borough whose work involves helping Richmond residents. It focuses on enabling those in support roles to understand, advise and support clients through the debt advice process. It also trains them in how to check a client’s welfare benefits and how to discover whether a client is getting all the financial help and support they need.

With immediate effect, Barnes will now be open for drop-in clients on Thursday and Friday, the service will no longer be available on Wednesdays. This is not a reduction in opening hours, we are currently re-allocating staff resources to strengthen service at other sites.

Richmond Bureau in Lower Mortlake Road will close permanently from 12th April 2012. In order to accommodate clients who have used this site, Sheen bureau will open an additional day per week on a Thursday, however, clients are welcome to attend any Richmond CAB site on any day that it is open.

Recently, we have expanded our service with free legal advice from local solicitors at Twickenham. To get details of this, you will need to contact your local bureau or go through our Helpline on 08444 826 9700.

We have also recruited additional advisers to our helpline as part of an ongoing plan to improve access. We are committed to ensuring that we meet demand for this aspect of our service.

Finally, we ask all clients to bear in mind that this organisation relies on a committed group of skilled volunteers to advise local residents. There will be rare occasions when volunteer numbers cannot meet demand at our drop-in service. If this is the case, we ask for your patience and understanding.
